The most powerful one-star general ever
I'm not too sure about the historical accuracy of some of his comments, but Brigadier General Garrett Harencak had some interesting -- and pretty funny -- things to say during his speech last week at the East Tennessee Economic Council meeting in Oak Ridge..
For instance, here's his take on Leslie Groves, the military director of the Manhattan Project.
"We haven't forgotten the great history (of Oak Ridge). We haven't forgotten what General Groves did . . . By the way, that dude had to be the most powerful one-star (general) in the world. He comes here, he says, 'I like this valley. It's mine.' It took me three months to get a new Blackberry."
Harencak, who was commander of the Air Force 509th Bomb Wing before taking his current role at the National Nuclear Security Administration and who as a command pilot sat on alert for nuke-loaded B-52s, told the Oak Ridge audience that flying an airplane isn't as difficult as it's cracked up to be.
While joking that he might get fined by the Secret Pilots Association for revealing the secret about flying, Harencak said, "It's very easy. You push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If the houses get too damn big, you know what you do? You pull the stick back. A chimp could do it -- but you've got the banana problem, of course, in the cockpit."
