Slavery was an important component. The economic tensions were real too. and intertwined. If it hadn't of been for the war, I imagine slavery would have eventually died out except for ceremonial reasons, because sharecropping was even more lucrative than slavery. That is what the British did with the Irish after they outlawed slavery. If the US had compensated the slave owners like the Brits did, the war could have been avoided. Maybe.

Probably not, though. Slavery was pretty central to Southern identity. In some senses, it still is.
