Smart Card Market to Reach 3.8 Billion Cards by Year 2000

Average Annual Increase of 52 Percent

POTOMAC, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1998--According to a SJB Services report, the total Smart Card market will increase to 3.8 billion cards by year 2000; an average annual increase of 52 percent.

Moreover, the demand for contactless cards will increase to 100 million cards by 2000. By financial worth, SJB indicates the Smart Card will rise from $1.8 billion in year 2000 to more than $6.5 billion by 2005.

Although Europe remains the heartland of the Smart Card, Asia is also experiencing rapid growth, from 10 percent in 1996 to a projected 30 percent of the world market by year 2000. Compared to the United States, this growth is fueled by the encouragement of government.

For the rest of the world, Smart Cards offer an opportunity to overcome poorly developed telecommunications, burdensome means of payment and paper-heavy public records. In addition, according to SJB Services, the market for Smart Card technology in those countries has barely been touched.

Phillips Market Intelligence Services provides information on the Smart Card market in the Smart Card research report, written by David Jones and Carolan Mearns of SJB Services.

This report delivers and includes: 97 tables, diagrams, charts and graphs; insight on 425 applications around the world; appendices with more than 280 named contacts with company addresses, telephones, and fax numbers; and details on more than 238 companies supplying the Smart Card industry. The report is also available on CD-ROM.
