According to Carlton, board-size limitations dictated that Creative use both sides of a printed circuit board (PCB) to mount the 12MB of memory.

They what?? There's virtually no way to mount chips on the back of a PCI board and meet the component height specifications for PCI 2.1. An early Diamond PCI card had a surface mount chip on the back, I measured it, it was over the spec by quite a bit (I don't have the spec handy any more as I am out of the HW business, but if I recall, it only allows about the equivalent of a surface mount passive components worth of height on the backside).
