ESS Technology Delivers Low-Cost Digital Video Recorder Reference Design For Its Vantage MPEG Encoder Products

DVR-HD7000 Reference Design Enables DVR Function in DVD Players

FREMONT, Calif., July 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ESS Technology (Nasdaq: ESST - News), the world's leading provider of DVD and VCD chips announced today the introduction of a new Reference Design, the DVR-HD7000, based on ESS's Vantage(TM) Video and Audio encoder device and the Vibratto(TM) DVD decoder device to select leading manufacturers of consumer electronics products. ESS believes that is DVR-HD7000 system will enable the first low-cost Digital Video Recorder (DVR) systems to be shipped for the 2002 Christmas and holiday buying season.

The DVR-HD7000 platform goes beyond the functionality found in traditional analog VCRs, DVD players, and hard disk drive-based Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) by enabling digital video recording, digital video playback, and digital manipulation of live TV broadcasts from cable, satellite or terrestrial sources. In addition to the ESS MPEG-2 Vantage and Vibratto chips, the platform includes an ESS analog modem for accessing television program guides, a hard disk drive to store audio, video and images, and a DVD loader to playback DVD content. This feature-rich platform brings powerful new capabilities to the living room, from real time control of live television broadcasts with instant playback and pause functions, to an interactive electronic TV program guide that intelligently and automatically selects what is to be recorded. Future versions of the reference platform will offer additional features such as recordable-DVD optical drives and connectivity options such as wireless, HPNA and Ethernet.

Patrick Ang, executive vice president and chief operating officer at ESS Technology stated, "ESS continues to enable new capabilities and functions for the digital home entertainment market with the introduction of our Vantage digital video recording products. By providing a complete encoding and decoding solution combining ESS's proven Vantage video and audio encoder and Vibratto's advanced and full-featured DVD playback functions, ESS is enabling its customers to quickly bring to market a variety of exciting new entertainment products at different price points."

The Vantage chip is capable of encoding MPEG-2 digital video and audio bit streams at bit rates from 1.2Mbps to over 10Mbps. The new Vibratto products are single-chip DVD solutions that integrate video DACs and a built-in NTSC/PAL/SECAM TV encoder.
