this could get into a very deep discussion. I think that a company or individual that operates with the "greed is good" philosophy has to look at a bigger picture. Unfettered greed without an ethical base can obviously lead to the situation we are in right now. I would argue that times haven't changed that much from when your parents were young adults. The crash of 1929 was preceded by a boom that was powered by greed. You were born right after the depression and at the beginning of WWII, so you weren't brought up in an environment of abundance. I suspect that JXN will tend to live within his means based on a similar premise.
I do believe that the philosophy of "greed is good" in business in much the same way that our legal system encourages a vigorous representation from both sides. The idea would be that both sides put forth their best case and the truth comes out.
If you take two competing companies trying to get the bigger market share and make a bigger profit, they will have to employ different tactics. In some ways, "greed" won't seem like greed at all. Sometimes it will seem like generosity toward their employees. But in fact, the goal would be to get the best employees to give them an advantage in the market. Or, they might drive their prices down and take a lesser margin to get more market share. And then they will try make the product more efficiently to reduce costs so that they can make a higher margin.....back to the greed part.
so, yeah, I believe that greed is good. But sometimes you have people and companies who act in a way that is blindly greedy without thinking of the consequences and it ends up being toxic to the individual or company. Then it pretty much qualifies as being lazy or stupid. Been there, done that.
gotta know when to hold em, gotta know when to fold em, know when to walk away and know when to run...... |
