I agree. Intel is building USB2 into their chipset and it will be available in all future Wintel configurations. But for now, and the rest of the 95% having bought already, the choice is clear. Firewire is THE wire to connect to digital video. Despite being inbred, USB2 will be the also available option for at least another year. Camera makers will adopt it to increase sales, but will be reluctant to drop Firewire for fear of decreasing sales. By the time USB2 is ubiquitous enough to challenge Firewire, USB2 will be just older, slower yet free technology.

It's important to keep in mind in your analysis of this trend that the target consumers in the video editing space are quite savvy. The old tricks that made fools of the masses will still work on some of the people some of the time, but no longer will work on most of the people most of the time.
