There is underlying competition over dominance of portable Internet market in 2.3§× bandwidth. Line and wireless telecom operators embarked on trial service. 5 out of 10 new technologies world over were introduced. Some point out that in order for Korea to gain upper hand in both service and technology we need a strategic approach to portable Internet. Otherwise foreign competition will only benefit.Among telecom operators KT and Hanaro Telecom are most actively moving.

KT held a demonstration in March of I-Bust of Array Comm. KT also plans to test 'F-OFDM' of Flarion and soon will test 'NAVINI' and 'Broad Storm'.

Hanaro Telecom will begin pilot service of Flarion and Broad Storm in May and is in discussion with 'NAVINI' and 'Runcom' for technology test.

SK Telecom completed test of Flarison from the end of last year and Dacom also plans to test equipment and technology of Array Comm. Together with this ETRI is leading 'HPi' technology research and development. See table.

Unlike Europe data communication market was formed based on high-speed Internet and there is little resistance to new technology thanks to sufficient consumer education.

In addition, high-speed Internet businesses are showing interest in this market in order to secure a strategic beachhead to enter the wireless business while complementing high-speed Internet business.

Mobile telecom operators are approaching 2.3§× band portable Internet market in order to dominate data communication and multimedia business.

Telecom experts say that there needs a strategic approach for 2.3§×out of concern about repeat of '2nd Qualcomm' in portable Internet technology. Go Jin-woong, managing director of Hanaro Telecom, said, "If the government plays a major role in selecting standard domestic firms will be at an advantageous position in royalty negotiations. When selecting technology standard, royalty should be lowered."

Oui, kyu-jin, doctor of MIC wavelength research institute, said, "Portable Internet technology will form a basis for mobile telecom technology after 4th generation. There should be a strategic approach in next generation mobile telecom standardization process from 2007."
