My only bow to fatalistic pessimism is due the nagging feeling that my eternal optimism in the fullness of time may not be justified by an unfortunate and perhaps sheerly accidental continuation of the endless disappointments that are the dress rehearsal for my eventual triumph.

I also like to give every failure the benefit of the most extreme doubt. Incompetence becomes brilliance, greed a natural impulse of survival, and vile calumny becomes charity.

This is perhaps too broad a brush to paint the human race with, but given the commoness of fault and self righteousness and the difficulty of knowing the truth, its natural opposition is too terrible to contemplate, allowing us scant justification or righteousness at all. The Angel Gabriel will find few to not deliver justice too, my own head being nervous as any. Yet pure Christian charity and honesty appears to be a lamb led to slaughter in the world of the wolf.
