Steve, why did we fight the Civil War? The southern states decided to secede from the union after feeling the north had become too powerful in congress. President Lincoln decided they did not have that right to secede. The first shots were fired when Union troops on Confederate soil were ordered to leave and did not. Yes, one result of the war were the slaves became freedmen. But to say the civil war was started to abolish slavery is wrong. There were slaves in the north, there were black slave owners, even the supreme court would not give Dred Scott his freedom. Also, during his Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln chose not to free the slaves in the north.
