Even more support for WDM in the LAN:

techweb.cmp.com

an excerpt:

The future of WDM appears to be in the local network, according to analysts, because the local access portion of the network is feeling the same capacity pressure from data transmission as are long-haul networks. The battle for hearts and minds among vendors for that portion of the network is beginning in earnest. "Bell Atlantic has skipped OC-192 and is going direct to WDM this year," AT&T's Butters said.

Ciena's president and CEO, Pat Nettles, agreed that the Bell companies face the same bandwidth constraints that prompted long-distance companies to install WDM. "There are IP and ATM needs in the feeder network. There are no good solutions for moving that kind of traffic in that environment," he said.
