Charlie,

I'll have to think about the Taiwan "threat". Just the
other day I was running around the office saying that,
to me, the next big wave of SC competition would come
from Taiwan as a fab for the fabless. I suspect Taiwan
will even grow more home grown design expertis with time.

U.S. companies will have to counter by quickening their pace of
innovation as well as tightening up the management strategies
and execute even better to continue beating these guys.

We'll see U.S. companies buying portions of Fabs their also.
Eventually the whole thing will run its course, Taiwan will
become absorbed into the global chip economy just like Japan
which didn't end up destroying the U.S. chip economy like
many had predicted.

So, I think they will be a big influence and we'll all watch
and react as they grow but eventually they'll gain their
place among the many. With growth and maturity, unforseen
problems occur and the the U.S. companies they were or will
be giving a run for their money usually get a second breath and
surge past the upstarts as they encounter the newly found issues
of bigness. This is a cycle that repeats.

A vague answer but sort of how I see the 5 to 10 year play here.

Bottom line, I'm not worried long term of the outcome but I'm
worried short term because theirs a group of companies going
thru rapid growth and you've got to take note but not panic.
And maybe invest some????
