SMOD beat the street by 2 cents. Net income up 68%; EPS up 41%, the street expected 0.29; SMOD release EPS of 0.31 according to First Call. The declines in costs for semiconductor memory devices have resulted in an increase in the value for SMOD as a percentage of our products' selling prices. Consequently, gross margins increased to 18.1% this quarter from 17.2% in the immediately preceding quarter. We saw a resurgence of unit demand in our standard memory module business as our desktop personal computer and printer related customers came back strongly. Our specialty memory module business continued to be strong with server, telecom and networking equipment manufacturers." Also during the quarter we introduced the ClipperCom(TM) World modem to our PC Card product line and received one of BYTE Magazine's Best of PC Expo `96 awards. In addition, we introduced our MPEG-1 PC Card (first to market) for portable computers and our two 144-pin SO DIMM memory module product families for notebook computers," concluded Shah.
