Don,
I posted about clathrates the other day on another thread. I recommending doing a couple of google searches on the topic so that you have a basic understanding of what they are and how they behave.

When I see something like this: "has already started to percolate into the open seas and atmosphere from methane hydrate deposits beneath melting arctic ice" I pretty much roll my eyes and skip whatever is being said.

I usually avoid anything that says NY Times. I was reminded of why when I clicked on the link that you posted:
"In the Philippines, which is still collecting the dead from Typhoon Hayan, it served as yet another example of the indifference of the rich world to the plight of the world’s poorest nations on the front lines of climate change."

The person who wrote that isn't a journalist, he is a propagandist.
