Penni, My long belated Review of "Eyes Wide SHut" sure to be controversial. -g-
I really liked Eyes Wide Shut, I felt that one of the largest themes of the movie is that one never really can be sure they know the whole story of what is going on in Life and we must be satisfied with this fact.
With Quantum mechanics and Einstein's theory of relativity being in complete conflict on how particles act on a subatomic basis, our entire comprehension of reality is uncertain. We live in an dynamic, inconsistent, evolving world that we don't completely understand.
Cruise attends this bacchanalian orgy with some Satanic overtones, .....so this is how the super wealthy live, and they are different than us.
wow there are some societies or groups like the skull and bones, or the Council of Foreign relations and things work differently for them than what we see on the 6 pm news. Some believe that Devil Worshipers exist and gather. SOme believe that UFO's control the earth. Other believe other implausible ideas of the world. Personal belief systems vary dramtically, but all are a limited perspective of a larger truth.
Did the speedballing girl save his life by sacrificing hers and are there groups that can do this with impunity.
At the end, the realization is impressed upon us that we can not know all the secrets of the universe and have to cherish and enjoy the things that make our life happy and full. Obviously family is one of those things.
What is a better aphorism of Life than Procreation, the continuance of of life itself so the movie ends with them going to have sex.
Instead of a verbose, overdone statement of the above Kubrick gives us the diametrically opposite way of stating the above.
