He travelled to Ethiopia and then Ghana. The return ticket for his trip to Detroit, via Amsterdam, was bought at KLM’s office in Accra on December 16 for $2,831 (£1,770).

Unusually for a potential suicide bomber, he took the trouble to change his return destination, replacing Ghana with Lagos. He arrived in Nigeria on Christmas Eve.

If he was in Nigeria on Xmas eve, it makes sense that he departed Lagos Nigeria to transit in Amsterdam and arrive in Detroit on Xmas. Donno how he could do anything else starting in Nigeria on 12/24.

Problem here is we are relying on Nigeria to do the key screening (when he initially boarded for his two leg flight). In Amsterdam's Schipol he was just an "in transit" passenger. You don't get much screening once you're inside the airports.
