I saw Avatar today. Despite the amazing special effects, the storyline of the movie was horrible. It reminded me of Fern Gully on steroids.

Basically, Marines are evil people who will indiscriminately kill if hired for profit (Jar Head Tribe). And scientists 150 years in the future will be so shallow they'll commit genocide against a race of people solely for profit, without so much as discussing the issue with the people who live there. After all, waiting more than 3 months is just too costly.

Oh, and Gaia is alive and well, we're all connected to mother earth - more Pantheism on display.

They could have made the same movie and changed the story line to a virus has infected planet earth and a mineral found only on Pandora is the only thing preventing millions from dying, causing an internal struggle within the main character to choose between killing millions on earth or the Na've way of life. It would have made a much better film. The only sane one in the film appeared to be an ex-Marine who was stuck in a wheelchair, because our Health Care system 150 years from now wouldn't fix his spine, unless the doctors got a call from an insane ex-Marine Colonel who used it as a bargaining chip.

Sad, but the cinematography was spectacular.

Based on the movie message; capitalism is evil, Gaia is a wonderful spiritual path, progress is evil and Marines are filled with horrible murderers, it should win the Academy Award for best picture.
