Dear Michael, Although I am not strictly anti-nuclear, especially for first world countries where technology and oversight are first rate, I still support Greenpeace for the wonderful work they do protecting our environment. I give even more to the Nature Conservancy because they buy up land in important ecosystems so it will be there for your children and my children to enjoy. Because so many of us take the Earth for granted I think its great that there are dedicated people out there devoting there lives to the Earth's causes even if those people get a little out of hand every now and then. We need the counterballance Michael. The majority of people do nothing to end pollution, protect our vanishing wild places, or reduce their own load on the Earth. I went to law school originally because I wanted to be an environmental crusader. Unfortunately, Michael there are so few jobs in this area I couldn't find a position.
As for U2's poetry, I think the more people it reaches the better. So many people turn a blind eye to the atrocities being committed around the world why not use poetry to enlighten? Horrible things have always happened and poets use their words to show us these horrible things for what they are. The poets didn't create these things, they merely hold them up for us to see, shocking us into realizing what we, as humans, are capable of. Artists do the same thing with there brushes, think of Guernica. Lewd acts with dead 3 year olds is hardly something that is going to appeal to a mass market and sell more records for this band.
None of what I've said takes away from the fact that this is a great country Michael. I try to remember every day how lucky I am to live here, in relative safety, in freedom, in luxury compared to so many millions of others in the world. Activists and poets don't make America less "shining" because in many ways they are our conscience. And we don't line them up against a wall and shoot them, that is another wonderful thing about America.
Have a good weekend Michael,
