Need help on CD-ROMS

I have a two CD's that were burnt on two different disc. One a CD-R disk and one a CD-RW disk. When I come home to use them to restore something I did out of town this week-end, they don't seem to work in my computer which is just a plain CD-Rom device. Can't a plain CD-Rom drive read disks that were burnt on another computer?
