re: The only argument in favor of the idea that they should have stuck it out is that they can't take their sunk investment with them. It is effectively seized by Chavez's government. OTOH maybe Exxon, and ConocoPhillips figure they don't want to send good money after bad.

Again, the main point is that we are being marginalized and oil is the lifeblood of our economy. It doesn't have to be if we make investments in the future.
