Samsung to Ship Digital TV to U.S.

Samsung Electronics plans to start shipping digital TV sets to the United States next month.

Samsung said it will be the first TV manufacturer to market digital TVs in the U.S., where the first digital TV signals are
scheduled to be transmitted in November.

Initially, the company will ship products with 55-inch screens carrying a price tag of $7,999. But the company expects
the street price to be below $7,000.

With a 1,080-pixel resolution, Samsung's DTV supports all of the 18 formats specified by the Advanced Television
System Committee (ATSC), the American digital TV standardization body. It also supports diversified sources of video
and audio, including digital versatile disc (DVD).

The company said it has already arranged distribution systems in 10 regions where DTV broadcasts are scheduled to
begin. DTV production will begin this month at Samsung's plants in Mexico.
