mike, with all due respect, i think you're reading too many benchmarks and not paying enough attention to reality. as many on this board have said, Intel competition has never been weaker. did you read what happened on the AMD thread tonite. they are in some serious trouble on many fronts. as for intel losing mkt. share this quarter, you have got to be kidding... who do you think initiated those price cuts this quarter, and who do you think benefited from it the most? Intel had a tremendous 3Q in terms of units sold. They did not lose mkt. share. yes, asps might have gone down a bit on the low end, but volume and other factors probably made up for it. Most importantly, these cuts totally devastated amd and cyrix, and sent a clear message to the OEMs: don't stray too far from Intel. as for a price war, intel dictates chip prices, PERIOD. AMD and cyrix will have to price their chips at discounts to Intels mainstream chips (which will be PII next year by the way). And finally, don't sell Intel short on technology leadership either. Intel has a barrage of products waiting in the wings in '98.
