I started out as a phone flunkie on an option trading desk in Toronto in the 70s when there still weren't many exchange-traded contracts around -- CBOE, Philly, Montreal -- probably 7 out of 10 series didn't have either side of a bid-ask except for the market makers. I also did a stint on the floor and remember noticing that most option MMs just stood around yakking all day because there was nothing to do
