PJ - as you rightly pointed out, MSFT is in business to make a profit, and that's what their .NET initiative is designed to do. They also face a difficult transition, since this initiative is a fundamental shift in how they go to market.

But the initiative requires a number of components that are not "One Vendor" solutions - .NET doesn't work unless the "building block" services are vendor independent. XML is not vendor specific - neither is SOAP. The programming framework, like every MSFT programming framework, "works best" on the MSFT stack - but it has to also work in the broader market.
