Intel's 64 MERCED Joint Development with HP -

Good news on this front. Intel and Microsoft made a joint announcement today. Microsoft is actively involved in developing a 64 bit version of Windows NT for the Merced.

Further, Intel verbalized that the new processor will be backwards compatible with the existing 32 bit software.

{==================================================================}
"Our announcement today represents an important milestone in the progress of Intel's IA-64 processor
program," said Albert Yu, senior vice president and general manager, Intel's microprocessor products group.
"The Windows NT operating system, optimized for the IA-64 architecture, will further extend the capabilities and
performance already seen today with Windows NT and the Pentium Pro processor. Starting with Merced, IA-64
will provide new levels of performance and scalability in the server and workstation computing
environments,while maintaining full compatibility with the existing base of IA-32 software."

So, just as with every Intel chip since the 8088/8086, our old software should fire right up when we get our NEW MERCED P7 PC's.

I think I'll place my order tomorrow.
