New Intel server architecture
boosts system performance
By Michael Zimmerman, PC Week Online

ATLANTA -- Intel Corp. is expected to announce here
tonight at NetWorld+Interop a new server architecture
that incorporates a tried-and-true processor for
streamlined processing.

The company's Intelligent I/O architecture (I2O) takes
advantage of Intel's i960 processor for offloading the
I/O processing from a server's main CPU, thus
boosting overall system performance, according to
company officials in Palo Alto, Calif.

The i960 has been widely used in printer devices for
the same purpose.

A host of server vendors were on hand tonight to
announce support for the architecture, including
Gateway 2000 Inc., Acer America Corp. and AST
Computer, among others.

AST announced the Premium HS Server, a mid-range
server that will ship at the end of the month.

Acer announced plans to support I2O in its new line of
AcerAltos 9100 servers, said company officials with
the San Jose, Calif., company.

Meanwhile, Gateway 2000, of North Sioux City, S.D.,
announced support for the architecture in its NS-9000
server series. The company will incorporate the
architecture through an I2O-compliant RAID adapter
card. Gateway plans to embed I2O on the motherboard
in the next iteration of its servers due next year, officials
said.
