But 20 years ago, many programmers were not thinking that far ahead. In many cases, the expected life of the program was not expected to be that long, but .... people start using it and it becomes indispensible, and it was not documented, either internally or externally, and not it is a real problem. These are the problems. Programs written back when memory and disk space were much more at a premium.
