IMHO, this will not be bad for Compaq. They have the advantage of higher margins on servers, in which they are leaders. Also with their higher share, they can spread their overhead over a larger sales base. Finally, they have a substantial international business which is more profitable.

Since they are share driven rather than margin driven, they are not willing to be undersold by any major name. As a result, you will see alot of otherwise good companies hemoraging money until they say uncle. My prediction is that some of these companies will fall by the wayside before it is all over. The early automobile market had some two dozen companies. It took several decades to get it down to four. I believe that paradigm will operate in the PC business.
