Barclays Selects VeriSign OnSite to Secure the First Online,

Real-Time Share Trading System in the UK

Business Customers Able to Trade in Real Time and Obtain Up-to-the-Minute
Trading Account Services and Information

SAN JOSE, Calif., RSA Data Security Conference, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- VeriSign,
Inc. (Nasdaq: > VRSN ), the leading provider of Internet-based trust services, today
announced that Barclays has selected VeriSign OnSite(SM) to secure its online
share trading service. Barclays will issue digital certificates to customers of Barclays
Stockbrokers, the first online, real- time certificate share trading service in the UK.
Subscribers of this new service will present their Barclays branded digital certificate
when logging onto the service, enabling them to access stock prices, and buy and
sell shares in real time over the Internet in a secure and private manner. In addition
to Barclays Stockbrokers, Barclays plans to use VeriSign OnSite 4.0 to integrate
digital certificates to secure other applications, including secure access to the
corporate intranet, and secure e-mail via the S/MIME protocol.

Millions of British citizens have recently become first-time stockholders as a result
of the privatization of government-controlled organizations. This, coupled with the
fact that the UK ranks first of the European countries in terms of Internet access, has
lead to the emergence of a new market for online stock trading. Previously, Barclays
offered customers the ability to trade stock via a telephone trading service. By
adopting VeriSign OnSite 4.0, Barclays can provide its expanding customer base
with the security necessary to take advantage of online trading. Beginning this
month, Barclays will issue digital certificates as part of the registration process for
its new online trading service.

"In implementing Barclays Stockbrokers online service, we needed an easy- to-use
and transparent security solution that provided our customers with the trust
necessary to conduct transactions online," said Terry Brookman, senior security
consultant at Barclays. "By adopting VeriSign OnSite, we immediately established a
complete trust services utility at a cost far less than building our own solution in
house."

"Through the use of VeriSign's trust services, Barclays is demonstrating their
innovative and nimble approach to address the needs of EU customers in the global
economy of the 21st century," said Richard Yanowitch, vice president of marketing
at VeriSign.
