DiviCom Encoders Chosen for GTE Media Ventures' New Hawaii Digital Video Services
Business Wire - July 17, 1998 08:15
HONOLULU--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 1998--DiviCom Inc. (NASDAQ:CUBE), a leading provider of compression systems for digital television, today announced that GTE Media Ventures Inc. has named DiviCom as the encoder vendor for its recently launched digital wireless video service in Honolulu.

The DiviCom MediaView(tm) program encoders form the basic building blocks for GTE Media Venture's advanced video network broadcast center serving the island of Oahu, Hawaii, with over 150 channels of digital entertainment.

GTE Media Ventures is part of the americast(R) consortium and a subsidiary of GTE Corporation (NYSE:GTE), one of the largest publicly held telecommunications companies in the world. The americast programming service is a result of a partnership of BellSouth, Ameritech, GTE Corporation, Southern New England Telephone (SNET) and The Walt Disney Company. From a technical perspective, programming includes real-time compressed material as well as Near Video-on-Demand (NVOD) streams, running pre-compressed, stored digital programming from video servers.

Over the past several months DiviCom has worked closely with GTE Media Ventures to install the new systems and test the services. In addition, DiviCom trained GTE personnel, using a curriculum specially developed for the new system.

Why DiviCom?

"We chose DiviCom because the company has successfully designed and integrated several key digital wireless systems," said Alain Louchez, General Manager of GTE Media Ventures in Hawaii. "Besides high quality equipment, DiviCom has provided us with outstanding systems integration support."

New Time Shift System

To accommodate the time zone differences between Hawaii, the West Coast and the East Coast, GTE chose to implement a time shift system. This way, prime time shows targeted at mature audiences are less likely to reach younger viewers at inappropriate times. Once "mainland" programming is received via one or more satellites, it is then compressed using DiviCom MediaView program encoders. The digital program streams are remultiplexed and temporarily stored on a group of servers for later playback.

"DiviCom is proud to be a part of GTE Media Venture's new service," said Tom Lookabaugh, president of DiviCom. "We attribute this opportunity to our proven track record in deploying digital wireless systems, such as BellSouth in New Orleans and Pacific Bell in Los Angeles."
