John - Re:"they can support the marketing/manufacturing cost associated with
any product category"

Sony teamed up with Intel last year to help develop and manufacture their (Sony's) initial PC product. This surely minimized their investment while maximizing the probability of getting a decent box to market in a hurry.

Interestingly, Sony was an advocate for the IEEE 1394 "Firewire" serial interface, which (a year ago) Intel did not support. I believe Intel's work with Sony was responsible for Intel now supporting Firewire and it's follow on, IEEE 1394.2.( 1 GHZ Firewire)

Toshiba has been in the portable PC (Notebook) market for many years. They practically invented it. Going to desktops should be technically easy for them. From a business standpoint, the Toshiba name has good brand recognition.

Remember - Toshiba is probably losing gobs of money in their DRAM/SRAM business. They may be able to stop/slow these losses by wrapping sheet metal around their memory chips alongside a Pentium or two.

As for Motorola - I believe they are trying to prop up the PowerPC market - creating sockets for these chips besides Apple's and IBM's sockets. Without a volume increase in PowerPC production, they (MOTO) will be faced with very high development costs on new PowerPC designs with very little (i.e., near zero) profits to pay for this if they can't get the manufacturing volume up.
