It might very well have been a mistake for AMD to have taken on Intel. Time will tell. The one thing I am fairly confident of though is that Intel is going to have competitors at some point in time. It is somewhat simplistic analogy, but at one point in time Ford had an overwhelming market share and the costs of setting up factories and designing autos to compete with them had to be considered astronomical in their day.

AMD certainly is risky, but based on what you are saying you must think AMD might be very profitable at some point in time.
