Takeover rumours /12th edition LU/ASND still cookin'.. (2/11/98, thestreet.com/midday musing) ...Charles Payne, head analyst at Wall Street Strategies, said he's watching a number of tech names closely to spot the next mega-combination. "I think there are going to be some major, blockbuster deals," he said. "Lucent is definitely on the prowl. IBM, I wouldn't be surprised if they made some kind of move. [Chairman Louis] Gerstner's done a great job, but beyond cost-cutting measures, there really has been anything that exciting." Telecom-equipment giant Lucent (LU:NYSE) has long been discussed as a potential buyer for struggling networker Ascend (ASND:Nasdaq), Payne noted. And the incessant Gateway 2000 (GTW:NYSE) takeover murmurs remain abroad in the market.
