Affinity to enter DVD-RAM market By Christina Follmann (christina_follmann@macweek.com)
Affinity Technologies Inc., a four-month-old spinoff of Integrated Circuit Solutions Inc. with a storage and multimedia bent, is preparing to introduce a DVD-RAM drive and an MPEG-2 decoder card for the Macintosh community.
Due in October, the drive and card together will cost $999. Affinity will also sell the drive, called the ATDVD101, separately for $794.
Both packages will include one 5.2-Gbyte cartridge, the company said.
DVD-RAM drives read and write to Digital Video Discs (DVDs) that are enclosed in cartridges. They differ from DVD-ROM drives, which are read-only and use discs that are not housed in cartridges.
Affinity's double-sided DVD-RAM cartridges, which have a 5.2-Gbyte capacity, will cost $59. Single-sided 2.6-Gbyte cartridges will be priced at $39.
According to Affinity, the internal Fast SCSI-2 ATDVD101 drive will transfer data at 10 Mbytes per second. It will read all current DVD and CD media, Affinity said.
An ATAPI (AT Attachment Packet Interface) version of the drive shipped at the beginning of the month; both ATAPI and SCSI models are already available in Japan.
