JMD - what you are missing is one thing. It is called trade deficit or exports. Many postindustrial industries just churn capital - they do not create new capital. Not all, but many.

Ask the question, why are trade deficits at record levels? Manufacturing produces a product that can be exported.

Software produces a product that can be pirated, financial services churns capital.

Build a car, make steel etc and you have a product that can be exported and return capital to your country.
