The problem is that there is a very small but real possibility that Watson and Crick got part of the structure wrong. Oh, the base-pairing idea - the basis for how information is encoded in genes - is certainly right. Genetic engineering, if nothing else, proves that by the fact that we can synthesize almost any gene sequence we want and have it make the corresponding protein. The rungs in the ladder of the double helix are certainly right. It's the double-helix part that is a bit doubtful. And that's where aesthetics and visual conventions come in.
