The Contributors We are Alpheus and Withywindle, two friends who are also both conservative academics. One of us is a classicist; the other, a historian. We are interested in our profession, in history and literature, and in modern politics and culture -- and we will write about all these subjects (and whatever else touches our fancy) in this blog.

Okay. Twice on this blog in the past two weeks I said I didn't think Scott Brown had a real chance to win the Massachusetts special election. But now, with more than half of Massachusetts precincts reporting and Brown's six-point lead holding steady, I suppose it's time to admit that I was, er, less than prescient.
That's the "bad news." The good news, as I said to Arethusa last night, is that Scott Brown's incredible surge reminds me of one of those moments in the Iliad when a minor character seems about join the hundreds of others in that poem who are killed in horrible ways -- but a chariot swerves aside at the last instant, or the rim of a shield deflects a spear, and the continuation of life is a joyful surprise.
In all likelihood, health care reform will now go down, and the voters of the Bay State will have spared us one of the worst legislative monstrosities ever devised by the twisted wits of congressmen. I salute you, you magnificent chowder-eating, r-dropping, New York Yankee-hating, rotary-building, Kennedy-enabling, parking ticket-issuing bastards!
