In December, Nokia still had over 60% of the Finnish handset market. Maybe Ericsson gained 30 percentage points in January, despite the fact that Nokia has three new sold-out models in the shops... if this is the case, the guy who wrote this article should be on the cover of Fortune. What an amazing scoop!

Even more amazingly, Ericsson is now offering a steep discount in Helsinki for its new "rugged" handset that weighs 250 grams and debuted a couple of months ago. An observer dumber than Jack Bensimon would think that Ericsson miscalculated the demand for a heavy, water-resistant model just as Nokia is charging up to 1'000 dollars for its new, 80-gram models.

Discounting a new phone within three months of its debut is what industry people would describe as "FUBAR"... but maybe it's some new kind of a "formidable", "dominant" retailing strategy. I hope Jack will have more insights on this development; I have to bookmark this page!
