Iomega Sues SyQuest for Patent Infringement 07/31/97

Newsbytes, Thursday, July 31, 1997 at 16:28

ROY, UTAH, U.S.A., 1997 JUL 31 (NB) -- REPEAT/By Sami Menefee. Iomega
Corp. [NYSE:IOM] is suing SyQuest Technology, Inc. [NASDAQ:SYQT] for
"infringement of Iomega patents for inventions used in both its Jaz and
Zip products" and other alleged violations. Iomega and SyQuest are vendors
of competing removable, high-density computer data storage devices.

In a suit filed in US District Court for the District of Delaware, Iomega
also alleges unfair competition against SyQuest "through the infringement
of Iomega's JET trademarks," said Iomega.

"This is a simple case of protecting Iomega's intellectual property,"
stated Iomega president and chief executive officer, Kim Edwards. "We
intend to enforce our rights with respect to Iomega's patented
technology."

Edwin Harper, SyQuest's president and chief executive officer, huffed in
response: "The suit is without merit. This is an attempt by Iomega to move
the battle from the market to the courtroom."

At root in the case is Iomega's charge that SyQuest is "selling products,
without authorization, which embody patented inventions" owned by Iomega.
Iomega also claims SyQuest's "syJet" advertising and marketing label
violates Iomega's JET trademark and tends to confuse customers about the
origins of the technology.

In its suit, Iomega seeks monetary damages plus injunctions to prevent
SyQuest from infringing against Iomega's rights.
