I am not saying that AMD can't produce K6 efficiently. I am just pointing out what I believe is a legitimate concern. Even Intel who has arguably the most experience in CPU process technology has been using 4 metal layers in their Pentiums and Pentium Pros (someone correct me if I am wrong on this). From what I know, 5 metal layer process is considerably more complicated than 3 metal requiring more precision alignment of patterns, more CMP's and CVD's (chemical vapor deposition), higher aspect ratio vias (contacts to interconnect one metal layer to another), etc, the combination of which produces more room for error. Thus, the potential for lower yield rate at least initially.

SInce I am not an expert on process technology, I would like to hear from other people regarding IBM's 5 metal layer process and AMD's attempt at it.

Regards.
