Good question Peot, but I don't really know the answer to it. The Taliban started from radical Islamic schools and anyone who has gone through those schools, and who works with the regime might be considered a member of the Taliban. Other people who fight for them are either warlords who accepted the Taliban as the national government (almost like a feudal system but less formal), or people that where drafted by press gangs.

I think the religious radicals are the core of the Taliban. Many of the warlords or commanders with their own small force, and the draftees might not exactly want to fight to the end for the Taliban.
