My rule of thumb used to be that if a drive would take less than 5 hours, I'd drive rather than fly. Lately, it's been 7-8 hours. Now, I'm pretty sure that when I go to the UJC GA in November in Nashville, I'm driving the 14 hours...

The situation keeps getting worse, and it can't get better until we modernize our flight traffic control equipment. But that isn't happening. We can spend trillions on war but can't spend enough to make the trains or planes run on time, to say nothing of sustaining our bridges and highways.

Yeah, I hear ya. I haven't been on a plane in three years. And try flying with allergies. I never knew how bad the air on planes was until I got allergies. Now when I fly it feels like someone is sticking needles into my lungs. The air is total crap. That's one thing Boeing's new dreamliner is supposed to help correct. I hope it does.

The mess in the air makes clear how little alternatives to travel we have in this country. The only mode I would consider besides planes is trains but they are next to nil in this country. I understand that the US's size makes it difficult for trains but I don't see why we can't break up the country into regions and then dramatically improve the train service within those regions, creating hubs in cities that are also airplane hubs. Then a person living in Seattle could take a high speed train to LA or Salt Lake or a person living in Columbus could take one to Chicago, a person in Little Rock could take one to Dallas or Atlanta or a person in Albany could take one to Boston or NYC. Strong/fast intra regional train service could dramatically cut down on the need for plane service.

Oh hell, what am I talking about.........we have wars to fight; exotic bombs to build. Who has the money for something as mundane as hi speed train travel besides Europe, Japan and Asia.
