Monuments are the product of the times they are created. We saw this at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin - it is topped with the Quadriga but no one thinks this is a monument to militarism even though it historically was related to the spoils of war. If Confederate War Hero statues are erected 50 years after the war, then it is a reactionary work. I don't like the destruction of art - even when the art is fascist or reactionary, but the Gallery of Postbellum Statuary with plaques describing who created it and why should be part of this legacy.
