....One of the more significant requirements is the elimination of ISA slots. The deadline for PC makers to eliminate ISA slots is Jan. 1, 2000, said Carol Jacobson, program manager for the business platform group at Intel, in Santa Clara, Calif.
Although some third parties, namely sound card makers, still build ISA products, those products do not support plug and play. This means using them adds complexity and the potential for glitches in Windows-based PCs.
Other requirements for business PCs are a minimum 300MHz processor with 128KB of integrated cache and support for Instantly Available PC, which defines power management guidelines for such things as the PCI bus, add-in cards and power supplies.
The companies are also recommending, but not requiring, that DVD (digital versatile disk) replace CD-ROM as a storage mechanism.
