Verizon Raises Local Payphone Call Prices
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ - news), the nation's No. 1 local telephone company, said on Friday it will increase the price of local payphone calls to 50 cents due to declining payphone revenue and increased competition from cell phones.

Callers have been paying 35 cents for an initial block of time and then paid an additional amount if they talked longer in some areas. Under the new rate, Verizon will charge 50 cents for local calls of unlimited length.

The company said the price increase, which applies to most of its markets, follows similar moves this summer by competitors Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE:Q - news) and SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC - news).

The company also said it will test 10-cent-a-minute local payphone calls in some markets. It said it had experimenting with the concept this spring with booths at Washington's Union Station and at Philadelphia's 30th Street Station.

Verizon operates 430,000 payphones in 33 states.
