I disagree with almost everything you wrote. I must be a very bad teacher indeed, because the greatest pleasure that I get is when a student comes up with an original, promising idea well worth pursuing. Note how many home-schooled students are shining -- as in Intel's Science Prize.
Obligatory Anecdote: My eldest son was learning a great deal of Greek in first grade, largely by deriving the meanings of dinosaur names. He had a collection of toy reptiles which he took to school, did show and tell, and stimulated many of the other students to bug their parents for further information and derivations of Greek-based words. We got this letter from his teacher.

Dear Mr.& Mrs. ******
Your son B*** knows an enormous amount about dinosaurs and Greek words. He has stimulated an enormous interest in dinosurs and language among his classmates. This is very disruptive and must be stopped.

Sincerely, (el stupido)

Of course, it was. Had I been the teacher I would have welcomed the opportunity to teach them Greek and paleonology until they got bored and we went on to other things.
