It is the exception that proves the rule.
Actually I have no idea how this beetle evolved. I can speculate.
This is often called a "Just So" story after the works of Kipling. I give some explanation like maybe the inhibitor came first as a mating device. I of course have no evidence that what I say makes sense. The just-so story is a dead give away of the amature evolutionist and I am often guilty of it.

These are the challenges that advance the field. A famous one of a few years ago which stated that the human eye was too complex to evolve was udderly demolished by some impressive talent in the biological sciences. I personally welcome more exceptions to further prove the rule, although I admit my position and resouces lead me to research and not original discovery in this field.
