When We Cry Out to God
Psalm 57:1-3

You may know that the Hebrew word selah means “think on this.” Selah is an instruction to pause and reflect upon the words of a particular passage or psalm.

In today’s Scripture passage, the psalmist, David, asks us to reflect on the words of Psalm 57. Take a moment to think about the meaning in these verses. How do they make you feel? What do you think David was feeling as he composed this song to God?

When historical context is added to this passage, we discover that he was literally running for his life. The jealous king Saul was following David, armed with a fierce desire to destroy the young warrior. It is evident that David was in danger and in need of God’s help.

Yet, David knew that even in an impossible situation, he could cry out to God and be heard. He knew that beneath the “wings of God” he could find refuge. In the previous Psalm, David acknowledges God’s keen awareness of his whereabouts, as well as his emotions. “You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in Your bottle” (Psalm 56:8).

When you cry out to God, He recognizes your voice. He knows you by name, and He is intimately familiar with your feelings. He is with you always, in times of rejoicing and in sorrow. Your cries will never go unheard.
