Thanks for your responses.
Win 98, in its own wisdom, installed the driver of its choice and made all of the settings except the resolution for this PnP device. It's just odd to me that the monitor was fine for more than 1 1/2 years and then crapped out after a week on the new setup, and the new monitor did the same after a few hours.
