A focus on de Guzman serves the purpose of insiders well. On May 6 1997, the Vancouver Sun quoted Canada Stockwatch editor John Woods predicting this would be the game that's played. In May Woods told the paper: ``There will be a huge public relations blitz, a bunch of inquiries and much soul searching, all with the one intention of finding [Bre-X geologist] Michael de Guzman as the bad apple in the barrel. If it goes much beyond that I'll be pleasantly surprised.''

When there's a major heroin haul at Calgary airport, do the investigators focus their time on tracking down the poppy grower in Thailand, or the courier that the grower sold the raw product to...? How about looking at the men at the top of the chain, those who arrange the financings, set up the courier routes, arrange for the paperwork to be filed etc. etc.?

De Guzman was a mechanic. He didn't invent the Bre-X vehicle. He helped tighten a few bolts, that's his role.

This whole focus on the bottom rungs of the scheme points out another strong reason why it's important to remove David Walsh and any other previous Bre-X/Bresea managers from any positions of authority or decision-making at this stage. It's shareholders' money that's being spent on the investigation -- and shareholders deserve to know that the investigators who are spending their money are not being directed, for any reason, to look more in one direction than in another. It's very easy in investigative work to only find what you're looking for based upon terms of reference or management guidance. It'd be a real waste of time and money if the investigation fails to properly examine those at the opposite end of the chain to a Dayak tribesman and a dead "fall guy".

For the good of all, except the culprits, any investigative work must be carried out independent of the influence or knowledge of any parties that may have had any role in the scheme. Period.

Any lawyers working in the interest of shareholders may be able to assist in ensuring the big players in the Bre-X swindle aren't unjustly overlooked -- they deserve credit as well as the stage-hands.
